Recently I’ve come into contact with a whole new demographic of superwomen who are all stars in every aspect. They look great, they feel great, they’re full time working momma’s getting that grind, going to the gym, being wives, fiances and girlfriends, and a lot of them were asking me for makeup and skincare tips and advice, so I decided I should start writing more blog posts directed LESS at other bloggers who already know what they’re doing, and spend more time catering to people who don’t have the time to do the research themselves.
THUS- here is my first post…the three staples. Foundation, concealer and setting powder, because who are you really without those three things? For me, even on those “no makeup, makeup” days, I still have these three products on, no matter how hard I try not to put the foundation on or skip the powder…these three products really are a staple and necessity.
Whether you’re just starting out in the makeup game, or you simply just don’t know what to buy, or don’t have time to shop around…then keep on reading.
- Foundation. Foundation is your base. (Well, actually your SKIN is your base and you should take wonderful care of it, BUT for the sake of this post let’s stick with foundation as a base). Foundation is where you will most likely start your routine and you should find one that works for your skin type. My skin, for example is combination- I have an oily t-zone and dry AF cheeks/temples, so I stick to more matte liquid foundations. If you have normal or dry skin, you could try a good stick foundation, and for those with normal or dry skin, try out a powder foundation (the powder will absorb any excess oils your skin may produce). One of the most popular long-staying matte foundations the last couple of years has been the Estee Lauder Double Wear ($50.00 cdn). This foundation personally did not work for me (read why, here) but being a cult favorite I had to mention it, AND give you a better-priced alternative, which will be the CoverGirl Tru Blend Matte Made foundation for a whopping……TEN DOLLARS! That’s right, that’s a $40 difference. You’re welcome.
- Concealer. Concealers for me are fairly easy because I feel like most of them are customizable. I’ve never really come across a concealer that I couldn’t tolerate. One of my favorite (and I’m sure many people will agree with me) concealers is the Nars Creamy Concealer ($37.00 cdn). The reason I love this concealer is because I feel like it’s a best of both worlds situation- it can be super full coverage, or it can be dewy and light/medium and natural looking. BUT WHY SPEND $37.00 WHEN YOU CAN SPEND $10.00 on the Maybelline Fit Me concealer instead! I find that this concealer does the exact same thing as the Nars Creamy, for a minor fraction of the price. It’s fabulous & can frequently be found on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart.
- Setting Powder. If you don’t set your face, what exactly have you been doing with your life besides putting the whole universe of beauty youtube to shame? Kidding. But seriously- whenever people talk about setting powders, it’s usually Laura Mercier ($48.00 cdn). We ALL know LM is the queen of the powder, but thanks to NikkieTutorials I am now here to offer you an affordable solution: Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing powder. ($10.99 cdn) I’ve been using this powder for over a year now consistently. It lasts me AGES, and really helps smooth out my under eye area while also brightening it at the same time. You can bake with it, or not…that’s up to you. It also comes in 6 shades so you can customize it to your skin tone. Winner winner, chicken dinner.
There you have it ladies & gents, my top 3 affordable dupes that should be in your makeup vanity. It’s time for me to very reluctantly go wash my hair as tomorrow is that bastard Monday and I have to go to work for another 5 days. Can you tell how THRILLED I am? Thank you for reading!
